Orgins of Libertad - Buñuel & Los Olvidados
February 25, 2008 by pablo
For those of you that watched my first film, the feature Runnin’ at Midnite, you might remember the characters talking about “Los Olvidados (The Forgotten Ones) by Luis Buñuel. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a rather remarkable film about some wayward youth in mid-century Mexico City.
Over the next few months, as we lead up to the first day of filming, I’ll be breaking down a bit more of my own intention of Libertad, and how, in a sense, I see this as a continuation of Brunuel’s work.

The idea for the film came from Buñuel’s exploration of Mexico City where he witnessed the “wretchedness in which many of its inhabitants lived.” He researched the project in the files of a local reformatory and explained, “My film is entirely based on real cases. I tried to expose the wretched condition of the poor in real terms, because I loathe films that make the poor romantic and sweet.”
