Project Libertad is the brainchild of Tucson born filmmaker Pablo Toledo. The project has evolved organically over nine years, originating from Pablo’s critical film studies at USC’s Film School and his post-graduation work with Youth Opportunity and the cable based Access Tucson teaching film-making classes to South Tucson’s at-risk teens, most who came from impoverished neighborhoods and were struggling to stay off the street and finish high school. Orgins of Libertad - Buñuel & Los Olvidados

Why Not A Documentary? Part 1

In a recent guest lecture I gave at USC, I was asked by a student whether or not Libertad was a documentary, and if it wasn’t, why not? Interestingly, a lot of people thought Runnin’ At Midnite was going to be a documentary. I understand why, too - I’m covering social issues in my films; the people and neighborhoods I work in are real; and they are usually based on real circumstances or events. All true, and most of those elements are usually found in documentaries and not feature narratives. Read more

Arizona Libertad Reception & Fundraiser

I’m excited to announce the first of three major events we are planning to kick off our 2008 Libertad fundraising campaign.

A Producer’s Inspiration

The other day Pablo asked me what it was about the story that spoke to me, or rather, burrowed within me and drove me to throw my weight and determination behind Project Libertad to fight for its realization.
After some reflection I came up with a few ideas, one about the heartbreaking character of Isango, the orphan boy in the story whose ache for kindness has not been altogether blighted by drugs or spending his days stepping among trash to find salvageable items to sell. Isango needs more than just the awareness of a select few. He, and all the other children he represents, deserves the help of many.
